Iron Deficiency in Indian Women: Signs You're Missing

[PLACEHOLDER: this topic touches public health statistics — cite current ICMR/NFHS data on iron deficiency prevalence in Indian women before publishing, rather than an unsourced number.]

Iron deficiency is common and frequently under-recognised because its early signs, fatigue, pale skin, mild breathlessness on exertion, brittle nails, get attributed to stress or a busy schedule. It affects a meaningful share of women in India, particularly during periods of higher iron demand.

Signs that are commonly reported

  • Persistent tiredness not explained by sleep
  • Pale skin, lips, or inner eyelids
  • Shortness of breath during normal activity
  • Brittle nails or hair thinning
  • Unusual cravings for ice or starch (a recognised but less common sign)

What to actually do about it

None of the above confirms iron deficiency on its own. A simple blood test (haemoglobin, ferritin) from a doctor is the only reliable way to know. This article is educational, not diagnostic.

Where dietary strips fit in

Iron contributes to normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, and to normal oxygen transport in the body. A sublingual strip is one way to get elemental iron with folic acid without the metallic aftertaste some people experience with tablets, but it is a food supplement, not a treatment for diagnosed anaemia.

This content is for general information and is not medical advice. If you suspect you're iron deficient, please see a doctor for testing before self-supplementing, especially since excess iron intake can be harmful for some people.
