Reading a Supplement Label Like a Scientist

1. Is the dose actually printed?

Look for exact mg/mcg amounts per active, not just an ingredient name inside a vague "proprietary blend." A blend can legally hide how little of an expensive ingredient is actually in the product.

2. Is it a percentage of what, exactly?

"100% of your daily value" only means something if you know which reference value is being used, and whether it matches your actual needs.

3. What form is the active in?

Some forms of a nutrient are better absorbed than others (for example, different forms of iron or B12 behave differently in the body). The form matters as much as the dose.

4. What's NOT on the label?

Check for added sugar, artificial colours, and fillers. What's left out is often as informative as the actives themselves.

5. Is there a batch-level Certificate of Analysis?

A credible brand should be able to show third-party lab testing for potency and contaminants, per batch, not just a one-time formulation test. [PLACEHOLDER: link this article to the Lab Reports & Certifications page once real COAs are uploaded.]
